Beatrix Potter Herself

With a keen interest in writing and drawing from an early age, Beatrix Potter created tales for family and friends before publishing her first book, ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’, in 1902. Following the success of the book, she went on to write 22 more children’s tales featuring animals.

Although best known as an author and illustrator, at the World of Beatrix Potter, you can also learn about her hugely influential role in preserving the Lake District landscape.

Born in London in 1866, she first visited the Lake District on a family holiday in 1882, sparking a lifelong connection with the area.

Following the early success of her published books, in 1905, she used the profits to buy Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey in the Lake District. She quickly took to farming and became a prominent member of the local farming community and a campaigner for local issues.

Beatrix Potter continued to use the profits from her books to buy land throughout the Lake District and work with the National Trust to ensure the long-term preservation of the landscape. On her death, she left 14 farms and 4,000 acres to the care of the National Trust.
