It’s hardly surprising that we think Bowness-on-Windermere is one of the best places to visit in the Lake District, given that our hotel is based right in the centre of this bustling Lakeland town. But with stunning views and direct lake access as well as lots of independent shops, eateries and local attractions, there’s a whole host of other reasons why you should make sure you visit Bowness if you’re staying in the lakes.

Popular Attractions

Whether you’re looking for family-friendly activities, to explore the lake, or somewhere to while away a wet afternoon, there are plenty of attractions in Bowness-on-Windermere to keep everyone entertained. Some of our favourites include:

  • Windermere Lakes Cruises – Explore one of Bowness-on-Windermere’s top attractions, Lake Windermere, by booking a boat trip. With cruises running from 45 minutes to three hours and the option of self-hire boats, it couldn’t be easier to take to the water.
  • The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction – Discover more about Beatrix Potter and her magical stories, which still enthral children today. Step into Mr McGregor’s Garden and meet some of her most beloved characters, all while completing the free activity booklet.
  • The Jetty Museum – Discover Windermere’s 200-year-old boating history at this interactive museum, which is home to a fascinating display of motorboats, steam launches and sailing yachts. You can even step on board one of the Lake District’s finest historic vessels and enjoy a trip around the lake.

Outdoor Adventures

If you’re wondering what to do in Bowness-on-Windermere outdoors, fear not, as we’ve rounded up some of the best outdoor adventures right on our doorstep: 

  • Orrest Head Walk – The first fell climbed by Alfred Wainwright and the inspiration for his walking series, this short walk offers stunning views of Lake Windermere. At under three miles long and with an accessible route available, everyone can enjoy the impressive views. 
  • Brant Fell – A fantastic walk for the whole family with just a short steep section to the summit, Brant Fell is a small hill on the edge of Bowness, which offers stunning Lakeland views. The walk is approximately 2.5km long and takes around an hour to complete.
  • Bowness Circular – Explore Bowness-on-Windermere, from the bustling town to the surrounding countryside and stretch your legs on this 6.5 km walk. Starting at Bowness Pier, head up Biskey Howe and enjoy the views before following the path towards Matson Ground and taking the footpath to Scout Beck and onto a section of the Dales Way. 
  • Watersports – Make the most of the Lakeland setting, whether on a self-drive boat, canoe, yacht or even a stand-up paddleboard - the possibilities really are endless.

Whether you’ve been outdoors exploring the glorious scenery or visiting one of the attractions in our Bowness travel guide, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite, so here are some of our favourite places to eat and drink:

  • Hole In T’ Wall – the oldest pub in Bowness is well worth a visit. Not only does it offer a welcoming atmosphere, but you can enjoy a range of local ales and proper pub grub. 
  • The Peter Rabbit Café – Located opposite the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, this themed café serves up unique and delicious meals and cakes, perfect for after a morning packed full of adventure.

Annual Events

Time your stay to coincide with some of the town’s popular annual events:

  • The Great North Swim – Every June, brave swimmers take to the lake for The Great North Swim at nearby Brockhole-on-Windermere. Whether you’re planning to take on the challenge or spectate, it’s only a short drive from Bowness-on-Windermere.
  • Windermere Marathon – Cheer on runners as they pass through Bowness on their way around the lake on this tough marathon challenge. 
  • Easter – The town hosts various Easter events, from Easter Egg Hunts and bunny-themed games at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction to craft activities at the Jetty Museum, making this a popular time of year with visitors from far and wide.
  • Christmas– There are numerous festivities taking place throughout Christmas, including fun filled family-events at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction
